Man getting ready for the grazing season with virtual fence collars

Monil Cattle Collars

Heard monitoring and virtual fencing in one simple system. Made for small and medium-sized US producers.

Monil virtual fence collars withstand all weather conditions

Top mounted for top performance

When our engineering team looked at every piece of technology that needed to go into the collar, they kept coming back to one question: where would it work best? The answer kept pointing them to the top of the animal’s neck.

From there, the solar panel has a clearer view of the sky for charging. The GNSS/GPS technology can do its job more reliably, and the cellular connection starts from a stronger position. Just as important, the collar stays stable and out of the way as the animal grazes and moves around.

Some useful product information

The Monil collar with lock weighs just over 1 kg.

The Monil collar for cattle can be adjusted between 75cm and 130cm in diameter.

The battery on the collar charges via solar cell and the solar panel provides the necessary energy for a full grazing season. Upon delivery, the collars come with about 70% battery. If you place them outdoors for a couple of days, they will be almost fully charged. The included charging station can of course also be used.

You never need to replace the battery. Under demanding light conditions, such as deep forest or during winter, it may be necessary to charge the collar with a simple charger.

Charging stations are included in the delivery. The charging station can be mounted on the wall and comes with a 1.2-meter USB-A cable.

Monil's collar uses GNSS from multiple systems, such as GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou, to ensure the best possible GNSS coverage. For optimal accuracy:

  • Avoid placing fences near tall buildings, mountain slopes, or dense forests (keep at least a 30 meter distance).
  • If distance is not possible, use exclusion zones with a good margin around obstacles to avoid incorrect positioning.

The Monil collars use 4G cellular networks to communicate with the Monil app, using the NB-IoT and LTE-M cellular standards. In the US, we currently support T-Mobile and AT&T networks. The NB-IoT and LTE-M standards are designed to be very power efficient and with extended range compared to other cellular standards used by phones and other cellular equipment. The rollout of the 5G network will not affect the coverage of the 4G network.

The Monil collar is designed to be as robust and weather-resistant as possible. The strap is made of TPU, the electronics puck is made of polycarbonate, and the lock mechanism is made of aluminum.

The collar is waterproof and can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

In the Monil app, we have a variety of features that allow you to analyze the behavior of the animals and the condition of the equipment:

- Heatmaps help you see where the animals have moved in the last hour, day, or week.

- Statistics on sound and electrical signals help you understand how and how often the animals interact with the fence.
- The app reports on battery status and coverage conditions. You will be alerted if the battery is approaching critically low levels.

- The app alerts you in case of an escape or if an animal is behaving abnormal, enabling you to detect potential injuries or illnesses.

Activity Insights for your animals:

  • Motionless collar alert
  • Daily activity charts
  • Decreased activity alert
  • High activity alert
  • Heat alert (based on rumination and activity data)

Available now in The Midwest

We know that every cattle operation looks a little different. Some producers want to start with a larger rollout, and others want to try virtual fencing with a smaller group first to learn how it works. With Monil, you can start out with as few as six collars and go from there.

Monil collars are available for shipping now, with local support in our first launch states (IA, KS, NE, OK, MO). We are also talking with producers outside those areas as interest grows.
